A love story in Tembisa took a horrifying turn when a couple, Lerato (27) and Sipho (29), discovered via DNA test that they are actually half-siblings. The revelation has sent shockwaves through their families and the entire township.
According to Lerato, everything seemed perfect until they started planning their wedding. “We were talking about lobola and dates, when someone jokingly said, ‘Better do a DNA test just in case.’ I laughed… then we got the results. I froze, bru. My heart literally stopped,” she said.
Sipho confirmed the shocking news. “I couldn’t believe it. I looked at the report over and over… my father’s name matched hers. I was like, Eish, no way. It felt like the universe was trolling us big time.”
Neighbours say the drama has become the talk of the township. “People are calling it a tragedy, but also… some are laughing nervously. Only in Mzansi would a couple find out they’re related just before the wedding,” said Nomsa Dlamini.
Family members are struggling to cope. “It’s painful, bru. You plan a wedding, you see the future… then suddenly you’re talking about therapy and apologies,” said one aunt. “No one wants to think their son or daughter was dating a sibling.”
Social media exploded after Lerato anonymously shared the story. Reactions ranged from horror to jokes: “Better check your bloodline before you catch feelings 😬” and “This is like a telenovela in real life.”
Experts say DNA testing is essential in certain situations, especially in areas with complex family histories. “This is rare, but it happens. It’s a tough emotional situation, and counseling is crucial,” said psychologist Thabo Mthethwa.
For now, Lerato and Sipho have ended the relationship. “We love each other, but some rules of life you just can’t break. It’s heartbreaking… but better now than later,” Lerato said tearfully.
